Packing Groups Within Class 8

Class 8 has no sub-divisions, but every corrosive substance is assigned a packing group reflecting its severity:

  • Packing Group I — high danger, requiring the most robust packaging, typically UN-certified containers tested to withstand a 1.8-meter drop test
  • Packing Group II — medium danger
  • Packing Group III — low danger (HCPC Training)

Packaging Requirements

Packaging must be UN performance-tested and chemically compatible with the specific corrosive being shipped, matched to its packing group.
